An 1880 watercolor view of Boston and the Charles River tidal flats as seen from Beacon Street in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood. At the time, the Charles River Basin was still being filled in to make land for the new Back Bay neighborhood. Featured prominently in the middle foreground of this watercolor is a pile driver or dredge used to prepare the area for land fill. To the right is a shear, a hoisting apparatus used for lifting stones to extend the sea wall along the Charles River.
